Nice to see Hall of the Mountain King get a mention here —- that thing is a superb hall of fame lp, ‘tage’s best album by far, and 300% classic heavy metal. Dungeons is good too (as are Where No Life Dwells & Trenchrot). Nice list.
I’m really enjoying the primitive drum machine thrash fun of Demon Throne (or Demonthrone, depending on where it’s written). Not the most creative riffs, but a great simple approach to vocals like vintage Venom meets Mille & Tankard. And not all fast stuff either— a fair amount of midpaced tunes, more Venom like, where they really shine. Recommended.
and marty— thanks for evilfeast. i checked that out and purchased the album i could find— wintermoon enchantment. i’m not sure how well this can sustain 70 minutes—which is my issue with midnight odyssey, who i like but need to like a LOT to choose an album of that duration—- but it sounds promising. overall it sounds like what graveland might sound like if they were to be injected with melody and competency.

S… Glad you checked out the Evilfeast. Wintermoon is definitely good as is all of Evilfeast’s material, but Lost Horizon’s of Wisdom is exceptional. A special atmosphere and great material resides on that one. He uses keyboards perfectly IMO.
I’m with you on Midnight Odyssey… some truly great black metal, but it’s often hard to invest the time in such a long release. His doom project Tempestuous Fall is also really powerful/great.

I’d agree with Marty in saying that Lost Horizons of Wisdom is probably his best. Mysteries of the Nocturnal Forest is a lo-fi gem with a slightly less ambitious but more focused approached to songwriting (Immerse Into Cold Mist is a fucking great track, I’d recommend checking it out in particular); I like it almost as much as Lost Horizons. Funeral Sorcery always feels a little too scattered for me to get into; the way the riffs are organized just feels illogical and confused. That’s a problem that all of his stuff suffers from at times, but it’s a lot more prevalent on Funeral Sorcery. Wintermoon Enchantment isn’t his best, and I feel some of the songs drag on a little too much, but it’s amazing at it’s best moments (the opening of Fullmoon Over The Eastern Woods or all of Wolves of Hyperborean Frost for instance), and the production feels nearly perfect to me on it.
And Midnight Odyssey is almost always a long car drive band for me. Though listening to all of Funerals From The Astral Sphere in one sitting would be pretty ridiculous in almost any circumstance.
