Aldebaran – Pleasures Of War
This is a two song seven inch from the new project born of the remains of Tusks of Blood. “Pleasures Of War” is the A Side track, and lays down some droning Black Sabbath inspired Doom Rock. The vocals, heavy with reverb, focus largely on drawn out screams and are mixed low, which lends a nice touch of atmosphere that more out front vocals wouldn’t have. Side B gives us “Astoroth” and begins with a movie sample invoking zombies and their dermatological issues, then rips into a thick lurch of mid tempo riffs, and more prominent vocals than the previous track. There is a dirtier feel to it, and a memorable hook that transcends the Doom you might be expecting from the first track. Also of note is the guitar/bass tone which is meaty and somewhat primitive, in a very good way. I personally preferred the second track over the first, but I don’t bite as hard on the Sabbath worship as a lot of people do. Either way a nice introduction. I’ve seen them live a couple times and I look forward to hearing some of the other tracks in their studio incarnation because they sound great live. – Scott
