Breaths of evil fire through the snow…
2 updates in one week? The snowy grimness falls upon all of you with blessings from the North! Cheesy rhetoric aside, the updates are a bit smaller as Jim and I navigate our lives, but there will hopefully be a bit more of us to go around thanks to this new music streaming capability that Jim figured out for us. Thanks for checking out the Ruins album. Since then, those outlying interviews are starting to roll in. This week finds a hearty and in-depth Evoken piece surfacing (Many thanks Vince!) and Canis Dirus just arrived…. not in time for this update, but it will be edited and ready for your consumption next week. Lot’s of good things coming your way, so stay focused on the Worm and do share the news should it please you. Playlists? Yeah! We care about what you’re listening to as always. Call it the sonic voyeur in us old dirty bastards! Till next week, enjoy the written worm! -Marty

Necrocurse – Grip of the Dead (Wow… this one is on repeat. So fucking good!)
Sacramentum – Thy Black Destiny
Therion – Of Darkness…
Immortal – All Shall Fall
Ruins – Place of no Pity
Bak De Syv Fjell – S/T
The Wandering Midget – From the Meadows of Opium Dreams (This album is largely boring and certainly not as unique/good as this bands debut, but some of the music somehow keeps me coming back. They really want to be Rev. Bizarre, but they are far off the mark)
Symphony X – The Divine Wngs of Tragedy
Evoken – Atra Mors
Derketa – In Death We Meet

Great interview, very interesting read.
Playlist- It was mostly a non-metal week and a shitty one in oh-so many ways 😦
Springsteen- Nebraska
Counting Crows- August & Everything After
Gin Blossoms- New Miserable Experience
Danzig- III: How the Gods Kill
v/a- Jangley Pop (homemade comp featuring stuff like Red Temple Spirits, Chameleons, The Church, The Bolshoi, The Fixx, New Model Army, etc).
Man, I had a shitty one too, I hear ya! Something’s in the f*ckin’ air lately … Anyway … Nice to see Danzig III on there, as well as The Fixx; I only know a little of their stuff but it is quality \m/
Man, I’m still digging that Medico Peste, great stuff! Nice to hear BM that isn’t simply a Burzum / Darkthrone clone \m/
Also wanted to ask our readers: what printed ‘Zines (if any) do you read? I currently follow Convivial Hermit and Chips ‘N Beer, but would like to add to list …
i read none.
I hear ya on the BM. Seems the really good Metal these days seems to wisely merge the Black, Death and Doom without being very obvious about it. The ethereal, majestic, romantic with all the punishing girth mixed together makes for very engaging challenging and fun music. It all pushes towards much better song writing and more away from the ‘riff’, which I think is the way to go.
Good to see I’m not the only one having a shitty time… Next week won’t be better I’m afraid. Shitty times mostly means a need for non-metal, music I can connect more with emotionally I guess. So it’s been Velvet Underground and Lou Reed, some Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Grinderman, Sonic Youth and also Miles Davis. I may be a metal head at heart but there’s only one dude framed on my wall and that is Miles.
But there’s been metal here and there:
Abominant – The Way After, Triumph of the Kill
I’ve got a soft spot for the oldschool and underrated like Abominant (and also the likes of Cianide and Deceased, bands that seem to forever soldier on in the underground)
Windir – Arntor
Fucking classic imo. Valfar is sorely missed.
Corsair – Alpha Centauri
That delicious 70’s rock feel!
Castleumbra – Cthulhu Wgah Nagl Fhtagn
Sounds exactly like you would expect from reading the title. Obscure and Lovecraftian with a swedish bite in the guitars. Features dudes from Machetazo I believe.
Rättenfanger – Epistolae Obscurorum Virorum
Dudes from Drudkh doing old school death metal the Celtic Frost way (UHH!!). Excellent!
Good to see some love for Danzig III! Nostalgia…
Ikben—
Thanks for Rättenfanger. I just ordered it. The second Blood of Kingu (Sun in the House of the Scorpion) is the only album I’ve really treasured from Roman Saenko since Drudkh last’s (final?) great album, Estrangement. Some pretty good stuff since then, but nothing at all close to my three favorites— Estrangement, Forgotten Legends, and Blood in Our Wells— or even the second tier classics, Autumn Aurora & The Swan Road. I think he’s been recycling material for a while and different projects— like Rattenfanger and Kingu— may rejuvenate what’s gone stale for him.
And shit, there are always those great Hate Forrest albums, Battlefields, The Most Ancient Ones and Purity.
Windir – Arntor….. A total classic! True prog black metal with the classic Norge atmosphere? Oh yes please!
Patrick… what’s that Mare stuff like? Been meaning to check them out as I’m a complete sucker for the classic Norwegian sound. Do they achieve this, or is it laced with modernization? I need to remember to check it out on youtube.
Arckanum… I have been a fan of his entire catalog, but the last album sounded pretty uninspired.
The album i mentioned seems to be the only one I have liked so far. It is very good. Unique without straying to far from the fray. I bought that Arckanum album based on a suggestion. I haven’t heard any of his other stuff. Although, I was told the album I bought was their finest and most relevant. I can’t speak to that, cause I haven’t heard any of the other albums, but I do like this one quite a bit. It is pretty good.
sorry marty, first sentence was referring to the Mare.
Zahler> Glad you’re picking up Rattenfänger. And thanks for reminding me of those fucking awe-inspiring (and that’s an understatement) Drudkh albums! I have all their stuff but haven’t played it for ages. Reaching for Forgotten Legends right now! Aaaaah, False Dawn… BTW I do really like the post-Estrangement stuff (yes, even handful of Stars). I’d say Eternal Turn of the Wheel is even a sort of return to the glorious ways of old. Never really dug into Hate Forest though, I’ve heard some bits and pieces a while ago but wasn’t completely sold. Maybe I should give them some more effort. Or I could also spend the effort re-playing those Drudkh albums to death like they deserve… So much music, so little time…
Eviltails> ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ is indeed often regarded as his best but if I were you I would also hunt down Fran Marder, Kosthoger and Kampen, his first three albums. They’ve been beautifully re-issued by Debemur Morti in hardcover digibooks. They have a sweet deal for all three on the Ebemur Morti online store:

so Arckanum is a one man project? If so, that is impressive. I’ll check it out. Thanks dude.
I’ll second the first 3 Arckanum albums. Pure quality and he sounded so fresh for that time those albums came out. Impressive body of work for being the sole member most of the time. He was also in Grotesque for a while as well back in the day.
I’ll take a peak into those 3, and Freek, they do have a good deal! All 3 albums for 20 euros. A damn good price.
Let it be known, participants on wormgear actually buy shit after they talk about it! haha. Speak evil, then damnit, hear the real evil!

One song off this new Aosoth and I’m sold. This is amazing, highly-original black/death; thanks for listing it!
