Transition besieging your coil / Relinquish your body unto ethereal soil.

The sun drops lower by the day, dark clouds gather, and we respond with more venerations to the coming dark… Marty offers his thoughts on the pounding heavy metal of Twilight of the Gods, Jim descends into the grime of Verminous, and I have a heaping clod of nothing to add. Drop in, and stay in tune for more next week…

In the meantime: Do you find the changing seasons affecting your listening habits at all? Any quintessential fall albums? Let us know! – Jake

  1. It has been a long and steady summer over here, only the last couple of days have hinted at the change of seasons about to come. I don’t think my listening habits change much with the seasons, I’ll give it some thought.

    Playlist:
Nhor – Towards a Light That Dwells Within the Trees. Wonderful. The artwork and short stories add a lot to the listening experience. Great find thanks to Jake’s review!
    Sinister – Cros the Styx
Pestilence – Testimony of the Ancients
Asphyx – On the Wings of Inferno
    Asphyx – Asphyx
    Gorefest – La Muerte
    Gorefest – Rise to Ruin
    Immolation – Dawn of Possession
Creepmime – Suffer the Shadows. Great dutch doom/death, deserving a re-release.
Arckanum – Fenris Kindir. Liked it from the first the listen but it’s still growing on me. Great mix of crusty riffing and ominous atmosphere.
Hate Forest – Purity. Still some of the most truly hostile sounding music I’ve ever heard. Love those barking vocals (instead of the usual black metal rasp).
    Opeth – Blackwater Park

  2. Fall is typically great for black metal for me as cliche as that sounds. But late fall always demands repeated listens of Sentenced – Amok. Something about the feel and atmosphere of that record. The week before Halloween when the winds pick up and leaves are blowing around…. I find myself focusing on the 1st 2 Mercyful Fate albums. Pure evil put to music!

  3. Pale Folklore and The Mantle must always be mentioned when discussing fall albums no matter how trite. I always thought that Cemetary’s – An Evil Shade of Grey has a good fall vibe too.

  4. Great suggestions. Especially Amok has that melancholy that goes well with falling leaves, dark clouds and cold winds. Skies are still blue and sunny over here but the blue is getting more pale and there’s a crisp cold in the air. Never really had an autumn favorite but as I’m playing Old Mornings Dawn now I feel this could be it for now… Incredible how this music works on my imagination, visions of solemn figures slowly marching through the most majestic forests imaginable, in an ancient world long forgotten…

  5. No real seasonal pattern for me. Barely aware of any change yet here in the South except I have less time to mow after work before it gets dark 😦

Props for mentioning CEMETARY, I liked most of their catalog and always felt they deserved wider recognition.

    Playlist
Amorphis- Circle. Better than the last one, but still very much in line with recent albums overall. OK, not great.
Gorguts- Colored Sands. Haven’t really paid it enough attention yet.
Evoken- Atra Mors. Keep coming back to this solid funereal offering.
Cage- Hell Destroyer. After checking out the Twilight of the Gods song, I’ll stick to CAGE for my Judas Priest worship 😉
Xinr- Beyond Woodward. Obscure wacko outfit from way back in the day. Anthology collects all their various recordings (they never had an official release, just a comp appearance TMK). For fans of obtuse acts like Red Machete, Max Planck, and perhaps Ripper.
Olympus Mons- Conquistador. If you’ve heard one euro power metal album from the SPV label, you’ve heard ’em all. Not bad, just generic.

  6. Necrovore – The Abysmal Plains of Hell comp
    A.M.S.G. – Anti-Cosmic Tyranny
    Altars – Paramnesia
    new Grave Miasma
Begrime Exemious – Wasteland Of Damnation (simply awesome)
Demonomancy – Throne of Demonic Proselytism
    Deranged – Morgue Orgy
Destroyer 666 – Violence Is The Prince Of This World
Inquisition – Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm
Nuclear Death – Carrion for Worm
Prosanctus Inferi – Noctambulous Jaws Within Sempiternal Night
Sinistrous Diabolus – Total Doom – Desecration
    Spectral Lore – Sentinel
    Ulcerate – Vermis
    new Urfaust single and split

  7. @Marty: yeah, old Fate sounds just about perfect right now… 😉

  8. Yo Nightsblood – Evoken Atra Mors is now out with the new vinly mastering (i.e. it doesn’t sound ultra loud and clipping). I haven’t gotten it in the mail yet, but waiting. heard it sounds much better than the CD. But, that may not even bother you, just sharing info. …

Nice to see Urfaust has a new single. I’ll go and check that out.

  9. New Begrime Exemious, cool! Hope there’ll be a new full length soon. Awesome black filth. \m/

Received some Lustre and Spectral Lore/Mare Cognitum today! 🙂

  10. Oh, my playlist:
Arckanum – Fenris Kindir (abridged BETTER version)

    Thats all.

  11. BTW anyone that’s interested in that new Begrime Exemious (like me!), I see they offer the digital version for name-your-price on: http://begrimeexemious.bandcamp.com/

  12. Jealous on the Lustre arrival! Still awaiting my vinyl copy of ‘Wonder’ – that album & the vinyl of ‘Old Morning’s Dawn’ will be spun mercilessly as the leaves fall.
Of course, I must also high-five Shawn’s Autumn Agalloch choices, being the unabashed fan that I am \m/

  13. Lustre’s Wonder is indeed wonderful, hypnotizing and soothing with a beatiful warm sound. Very nice discovery (thanks to wormgear!), just like Nhor; listening to Within the Darkness Between the Starlight this morning (while watching the pouring rain outside, seems like autumn has come) and it is truly majestic. Recommended autumn music, one of this years most special albums so far.

  14. Just saw this:

…which made me happy. Coroner deserves the credit. Plus, as a positive by-effect, maybe they’ll finally re-release their discography.

  15. I still to this day listen to Punishment for Decadence with my jaw on the floor. Amazing band.

  16. The documentary looks awesome. Thanks for posting this! Will hopefully soon find the time to knock out that Coroner catalog retrospective piece I have been stewing on forever…

  17. That is a great idea! Looking forward to it. Ha, now you have to deliver… \m/

  18. I’m full of great ideas…. time on the other hand is an ongoing enemy! Oh well!

  19. Ah, just hire some personnel to do the other stuff. Coroner, man!!! 😉

  20. Fall is my favorite time of year and a lot of the old standbys come out during the season. Obvious stuff like The Misfits, Samhain, Type O Negative. I have been adding a lot of new ones to the seasonal listening. Wolves in the Throne room are a standard now, Ghoul, Asphyx for some reason sounds even more punishing in the Fall. Candlemass, Katatonia and doomy-ier things of course.

Good call on the Sentenced. Fall time standards.
