How deep you long for death, now as your kingdom fades away …
As Marty’s head swirls in packing and pre-orders for his label’s latest releases, still the Finnish Metal warrior within himself has squeezed out the seconds necessary to find and dissect extremity for our bleary-eyed readers across the inter-globe. And I, the trusty O’Donnell Robin to his nippled-Clooney Batman, have also risen from my domesticity to bring you sounds both heavy and uh, not-so-much. To whit: the dark folk of Deutschland’s Nebelung, the grave-robbing greatness of Indonesia’s Exhumation, the ‘jazz-whatever-metal’ of new Cynic, and the New Mexico doomy black metal of Lamentations of the Ashen. And for those of you looking for a US distro carrying the recently-reviewed awesome release by Thunderwar, looky here. Post those pugnacious playlists and comment to your caulk’s content!

It’s always tempting to throw in some quirky thing for hipster irony cred but I can’t even think of anything. It’s been a steady stream of getting my ass kicked eight ways from the 80s. Even that BEASTMILK is only listened to by metalheads to my knowledge. METAL!
Thunderwar, hell yes. Ordered. Spun these this past week:
Bauhaus – The Skies Gone Out
Crows – The Dying Race
Eternal Champion – The Last King of Pictdom
Christicide – Upheaval of the Soul
Enfeus Lodge … really dig Hunferd’s vocals
Wolfhetan – Entruckung
Vokodlok – Unchain the Wolf
Protector – Urm the Mad
Benestrophe – Sensory Deprivation
Grotesque … did, does, and always will rule … ripped from the cross!
Scarlet P,
I relish Marching Out, but man…I wish the guitars were stacked and on the sides—I know he wants people to hear every nuance, but the production choice of one guitar in the middle for most of the album diminishes some power. Still, the best metal album to have this amount of neo-classical stuff, and just loaded with great riffs and catching singing.
I have Abysmal Grief’s Misfortune, and think it’s decent, but that it runs out of ideas after about 25 minutes and then just coasts through filler until the end. Are the others more thoroughly composed?
Rytkonen,
Evilfeast. Wintermoon Enchantment. So this suffers from levianthanism, a problem the “band” Levianthan had among others— very long songs with a bunch of good ideas, but little clue how to arrange them into meaningful journeys. The mood here—especially the new age keyboards—is good, but do the other albums cohere a little more? Or is it always this random?

Zahler – ‘Feretri’ is their last LP, and I think is their best work. I love the entire album and don’t feel that it runs dry of ideas. It also sounds the best production wise.
Scarlet P,
Thanks— I ordered it.
Scarlet P, yes love Detaching From Satan! Such glorious riffing on that one, and the atmosphere cannot be beat!
Zahler. I love a few Abysmal Grief EPs and a particular 7″ too. They are glorious in all ways. But I know what you mean by the first two albums. Concept is THERE, but 100% execution
1. Exsequia Occulta
2.Foetor Funereus Moruorum
3. Abysmal Grief / Tony Tears split. The Tony Tears song is amazing. I think maybe the only really awesome song he did solo.
Svart is issuing Death SS 7″ re-releases now. Those are really cool. Long live ‘The Death of Steven Sylvester…!”
